There is a slight disadvantage, though — Check Disk may require a lot of time to perform its task. It depends on many things, like overall PC speed, number of files and folders on the disk, amount of RAM, and disk size. Also Windows XP chkdsk wants exclusive access to the computer.
Badly fragmented disks can cause a lot of problems, like general system slowdowns, slower startup and shutdowns, and even computer crashes.
Basically, your hard drive is the slowest part of your computer and file fragmentation makes it even slower. Windows has a built-in Disk Defragmenter. Like any other defrag utility it gathers file fragments that are scattered all over your disk and writes them into adjacent clusters. But to be honest, I never use Windows Disk Defrag — it takes quite some time to do its job and skips too many files.
The good news is that there are good free defrag utilities available for download. If something happens to be accidentally removed, odds are that it is available online to download. After cleaning up unneeded programs, temporary files are left behind which often do not get cleaned up properly. Most of these can be safely removed. Regular day-to-day use of a computer will create new files, modify existing files and remove ones that are no longer needed.
In addition, the records and attributes which provide detail on what the file is and where it is stored may become inconsistent and corrupt. Over time, as the amount of fragmentation rises, it will begin to hinder performance and reliability of the machine.
Listed below are a few of the tools that are built into the Windows Vista and Windows XP operating systems that will assist with performing the tasks illustrated above.
There are other ways to reach System Properties. Right click My Computer and select Properties from the drop down menu. The Break key is usually located at top far right of your keyboard. You should now see "Performance and Maintenance" listed in the right hand pane.
Click "Switch to Classic View" to return to your previous setting. Thanks Nepatsfan As it happens it finally took me to an area which I'd visited before I was hoping to find some startling info, never mind First is a misconfigured firewall. Second is trying to use email to initiate the RA session when one or both of the computers are behind a router.
I've found it a lot easier to use Windows Messenger in this situation. If you post a question to the remote group make sure you mention if the computers are using firewall programs or routers.
Thanks again Nepatsfan, I will pursue your suggestions I note your comment about Windows Messenger and we have at least reached that interaction successfully I point out though that I have tried all combinations of checked and unchecked boxes and the result is always the same. Thanks again I will post again once we pursued this matter further. It then went like a dream Glad to hear you were able to get RA running.
